  • Class Description
    In this 13-week Live Class, Dynamic Sketching, instructor Charles Hu will teach you the core fundamentals of dynamic sketching. You will learn to focus on gesture, shape, and structure while drawing various subjects. Charles will first introduce you to the materials needed for the course and give you basic drawing exercises that will help strengthen your hands' muscle memory. From there, you will learn to manipulate geometric shapes and add surface details. Charles will demonstrate drawing animal skeletons , sea creatures, insects, animals, landscapes, costumed figures, cars, and more. In addition, you will explore sketching in color using gouache. After this course, you will develop an ability to draw with confidence and break down any 3D subject into a 2D structure.

  • Format
    This Live Class is presented as a pre-recorded lecture with live critiques. While it is encouraged that you attend class live on the dates and times specified below, it is not required, and you can still watch a DVR of the class between weekly classes, and turn in your assignments for critique.

    As a Live Class participant, you will attend class digitally, via a live stream which will appear on the NMA.art website. Each week, you will be asked to watch certain sections pre-recorded course instruction, then complete the assigned homework. You will then submit that homework for an opportunity to have it critiqued live by the instructor. During class, you can talk with other students, ask the instructor questions, share your work, and receive feedback on your assignments.

  • Day and Time
    This Live Class will run for 13 weeks. The first week is an introduction and the following 12 weeks will line up with the pre-recorded content. Starting week 2, the first hour of class is reserved for Office Hours.

    Class runs every Thursday from 10am - 12pm PT starting May 26th, 2022.

Meet Your Instructor

Charles Hu is a figure painter and notable art instructor. In 2007, he co-founded his own fine art school, 3Kicks Fine Art Studio in Pasadena, California. Charles received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He began his instructional career at the L.A. Academy of Figurative Arts. His commissions include numerous portrait paintings, character designs for film and game pitches, murals, and comic books: one of them being the movie End of the Spear. He has exhibited at Wendt Gallery in Laguna Beach, California. Charles is currently full-time faculty at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He has also taught at Laguna College of Art and Design, and Gnomon – School of Visual Effects, Games & Animation.
